Padilla Cigars is evoking literary icon Ernest Hemingway with a limited-edition cigar called For Whom the Bell Tolls. It’s named after one of the author’s most famous works and is coming to market next month.
Made with a pigtail cap, For Whom the Bell Tolls consists of a dark broadleaf wrapper from the Connecticut River Valley, a Nicaraguan Corojo ’99 binder, and Nicaraguan filler from Jalapa, Condega, and Esteli. The cigars are made in Nicaragua by A.J. Fernandez who grows the Nicaraguan tobacco as well.
The artwork on the band features the motto “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and two lion heads with a banner reading “It Tolls for Thee,” which are the final two lines of a poem of the same name by Elizabethan poet John Donne, from which Hemingway got the title of his book. Though the band reads “For Whom the Bells Toll,” Padilla says that this was a printing error.
Offered in only one size, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a box-pressed corona gorda measuring 5 5/8 inches by 46 ring gauge, though brand owner Ernesto Padilla told Cigar Aficionado that he does plan to release additional sizes early next year.
It has a suggested retail price of $9.50 each and will come in packs of five. Production will be limited to 400 five-packs.
Retailers can expect the cigars by the middle of September.
