Procigar Cancels 2021 Festival Due to COVID-19 Concerns

By Tobacco Business -April 5, 2021

After initially postponing its 2021 festival, the Association of Dominican Cigar Manufacturers (Procigar) have announced the cancellation of this year’s festival due to precautions being taken in response to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

Procigar is an annual event that highlights the cigar and tobacco culture of the Dominican Republic. For a week, cigar enthusiasts from around the world all converge in the Dominican Republic for an in-person and intimate look at the tobacco growing operations and cigar making processes from some of the world’s leading tobacco growers and cigar manufacturers. The festival typically begins in La Romana with activities built around Tabacalera de García before shifting over to Santiago where attendees take part in daily factory and field tours during the day and different dinners and parties at night.

In a press release, Hendrik Kelner, president of Procigar, commented: “We have made the difficult decision to cancel our Procigar Festival 2021, we know that this decision is disappointing, but we hope that everyone can understand that right now our priority is to keep the collaborators and participants of the event safe.”

Already, Procigar has announced that its 2022 event will take place Feb. 20-25, 2022 and will go on as planned as long as COVID-19 conditions continue to improve.
